Ancestors of Nora Jane Catherina “Jennie” Stephan

Roots of the Stephan family from Dolnoslaskia in Prussia.

The Stephan family name originates from Prussia from the Province of Lower Silesia. Nowadays this province is part of Poland and can be found in the South-West where it borders on Czech Republic and Germany.

The Kahler family name originates from the region Württemberg which is part of what is officially called the Country of Baden-Württemberg. It is, much like in the USA, a state in the South West of Germany which borders on Switserland and France. The Blessing family name originates from the same state/region.

The oldest fount member of the Stephan family tree is Conrad Kahler.
1.1. Conrad Kahler was born on September 9, 1800 in the Duchy of Württemberg. He passed away at the age of 73 on December 31, 1873 in Dunnstable Township, Clinton, Pennsylvania, USA.
Conrad married Catherine Elisabeth ?Kohler? about 1827 in what then was called the Kingdom of Württemberg.

The couple raised the following children:

2.1. [F] (i) Catharine Kahler was born abt. 1828 in the Württemberg region in Germany.
2.2. [F] (ii) Elisabeth C. Kahler was born on January 28, 1833 in the Württemberg region in Germany. She passed away at the age of 63 on September 21, 1896 in Beech Creek, Clinton, Pennsylvania, USA.

A watchful pair of eyes will notice a second name on the stone. From a timeline perspective this can only be a daughter, presumably from an earlier marriage. And since Wilhelm only entered the USA in 1840 that daughter must have been born in Prussia as well.

Annie Stephan – born June 15, 1833 – died Mar 18, 1878.

Because the name of the mother is not on the immigration record and otherwise nowhere to be found, she appearantly passed away in Prussia which may have triggered the plan of Wilhem te emigrate to the USA.

Wilhem and Catherine raised the following children:

Conrad Stephan married (2) Emma G. Quigley on June 14, 1881 in Cherokee, Cherokee, Iowa. Emma was born in 1865 in Illinois according to the 1885 Pitcher/Aurelia Census. Due to the fact that she was only 16, the marriage was by the Court’s administrator in the Cherokee County Courthouse. The court record doesn’t show her parents which leads us to believe that she was orphaned. The couple did not have children and after Conrad’s death in 1889 she moved out of the Stephan family home. No records dating after 1885 were found of her yet.
